Q. How are you currently bridging the gap between innovation and regulation? Brewer Science and the other members of the American Materials Technology Partnership (AMTP) are working closely with state and federal legislators, and other policymakers, to ensure that innovation, technology, workforce and environmental perspectives are the keystone drivers for the regulatory process. This will enable long-term, (50+ years) sustainable economic growth at all levels – industry, state, national and international.
Our new coalition is spotlighting the importance of materials development that pushes forward all facets of technology. We believe a robust U.S. microelectronics industry is imperative to national security, advanced technology competitiveness and job creation. It is time for the United States to step up and again lead the charge in producing cutting-edge technologies through the creation of advanced material designs. This material innovation, supported by appropriate policy and regulation, cannot only enhance U.S. technological capabilities but also pave a path forward for the next materials age.
Q. Job advice in three words? Cultivate communication skills.
Q. What can innovators learn from policymakers? In my experience, innovators tend to be driven by a straightforward focus on a single goal or outcome, which may indeed be necessary to achieve their vision of success. However, I find they therefore often lack an appreciation and understanding of the multiple and often conflicting objectives policymakers must manage.
Q. What can policymakers learn from innovators? For me, it comes down to taking the long view. For policymakers, a take-away from innovators would be to look forward with future vision; seeing and building something greater by thinking outside of the lines, instead of just solving immediate problems.
Q. Can you describe a skill you have carried throughout your career that has always proved to be valuable? I think the skill I’ve built upon most is what has enabled me to help launch and serve as AMTP’s first executive leader, empowering success through synergy and mutual benefit. That’s what AMTP does at an organizational level, as well.
