Q. How are you currently bridging the gap between innovation and regulation? I have been working in the security space for decades, which has always required keeping an eye on privacy regulation and working closely with policymakers. The current lack of federal privacy regulation has resulted in a patchwork of legislative solutions at the state level, which poses difficulties for any business operating across state lines, not to mention confusion for consumers. In addition, these laws are being overlayed on an outdated process – individual data and information exchanged by businesses for businesses about consumers without their involvement. Instead of waiting to change or enhance existing laws and regulations to stop the degradation of consumer privacy and control of their data, we took a positive approach by flipping the paradigm. We put the individual first and then explored ways to provide visibility into their own data, as well as the ability to control and protect it moving forward. Trust is the most powerful and sought-after currency in our society today. At Endera, we’ve developed innovative, privacy-centered systems for individuals, businesses, and employers that respect personally-identifiable, sensitive information, providing maximum privacy all around.

Q. Job advice in three words? Always think ahead.

Q. What can innovators learn from policymakers? Policymakers are often faced with the formidable task of reconciling a broad array of interests into concrete actions. It’s easy for innovators to narrow their field of vision while focusing on their own industries, but maintaining this broader perspective is key to finding the best solutions for society.

Q. What can policymakers learn from innovators? Innovators are often very attuned to societal needs or gaps in convenience that the wider public might not be aware of. Policymakers should listen to emerging voices across technology and business to identify areas with the greatest potential for impact. Innovators can solve complex problems with sometimes simple solutions.

Q. Can you describe a skill you have carried throughout your career that has always proved to be valuable? Outwork and outthink your competition. Always have a plan A, B, and C.

Q. What is the best job interview question you have ever been asked? It’s been 25+ years since I interviewed for a job!

Q. Favorite spot for a coffee meeting? Starnut in McLean, VA

Q. Favorite book you recommend to TheBridge community? Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand

Q. Why are you part of TheBridge community? Throughout my career, it’s become clear to me that issues with technology don’t just affect any one part of the population. In order to find the most effective solutions, it is essential to create and foster a space where colleagues from diverse backgrounds with different tools at their disposal can work together.

Q. Everyday is probably different, but are there certain skills you think are essential to your job? Always attempt to know your audience, try to hire people that are smarter than yourself, instill a culture of agile environment, and treat your staff fairly.

Q. Looking back, what advice would you give yourself in the beginning of your career? Be careful as to what type of investors you want to partner with when seeking outside Capital.

Q. If you had to live in another city, which would it be? Naples, Italy

Q. Best advice you have received? Have a goal and go for it!

Q. Do you have a morning routine? Power walk everyday (unless its pouring or slippery!). This helps clear my head and organize my thoughts.
